Who knew back in 1972, when I was a freshly-named
delegate to the first International Conference on the Decade of
Women, that 30 years later I'd still be still praying for the passage
of an Equal Rights Amendment in my own country, that women in the
third world would still be subject to torture and slavery, bodies
and spirits abused and mutilated beyond description or reason?
Well, I know it now. I've learned a lot of lessons
through the years: Across my lifetime I helped establish the first

How it all started

degreed Women's Studies program in the United
States; worked actively founding and helped support early Lesbian,
Gay, and alternative sexuality affinity groups; I was a tutor for
autistic and aphasic children; a bartender; did guerilla theatre
with the VVAW in Denver when Nixon ordered the mining of Hanoi and
Haiphong Harbors; I was an adult theatre manager; SFSI volunteer;
taxi driver; pursued a career in law and community activism; co-owner
of Random Starr Video in Hollywood, producer of music videos in
the shadow of the birth of MTV; teacher; a stint as a professional
messenger; a creator of parades & parties for more than a million
people; Board member of a number of community organizations; organizer
and speaker at the 1987 March on Washington; managed an attorney
service; a constant spiritual seeker; a rebellious rogue and sensual
hedonist; spirit healer; an artist; a gourmet cook, then caterer;
kaseka to the dying and their loved ones; a kinetic sculpture developer
and pilot; a Nannagramma; a nursery manager. There's more. There's
always more. There's so much more. I guess you could call me a Renaissance
Woman.
I now also find myself a widow, having lost my
partner of nearly 20 years in early 2003. That emotional fog is
lifting and I'm excited by my involvement with the Camp Betty Campout.
I've done much in my life for which I am proudparticipating
in birthing Betty is a highlight. I look forward to watching this
baby grow through the years, shaped and loved by all her participants.
