Behind the Scenes - The Buttersprites

Profile

Pan-Asian in a volcanic, Pacific Rim kinda way, the Buttersprites draw energy from downtown Tokyo, mossy Seattle pubs, and cartoon monsters. Fierce, fabulous, and self taught, the Buttersprites emerged three years ago from a glamorous parallel universe of glitter, cherry blossoms, and nurse uniforms. With members hailing from Washington, Hawaii, and Japan, their simple, charming sound is by turns sweet and punky, like the soundtrack from some eighties independent film about zombies and kissing. Lyrics are in Japanese and English.

- Drummer Jen Gay, a vintage motorcycle racer and French-pop DJ
- Vocalist Haruko Nishimura, 1/2 Nina Hagen, 1/2 Yoko Ono, and 100% Butoh dancer
- On keyboards, jet-setting photo-journalist Julie Grant
- Bass player, Lunarre Omura a laptop warrior and Hawaiian sugar princess
