Behind the Scenes - JEN/ed

Profile

JEN/ed is both a WO/mon and concept: writer, renegade poet, filmmaker, active-ist. The focus of her work is challenging—people, institutions, perceptions.

Many American politicians and legislators have worked and continue to work to 'dumb down' the people of this country, taking away our rights and ability to think and speak for ourselves. JEN/ed strives to invite and encourage individuals to seek and express their own stories. Jen does this by sharing her life-truths along with others that she gathers in her travels. The only way to break free from our taught HIS-STORY is to live one's own.

"When JEN/ed takes the mic in her hand and looks slyly out over the audience, she is sizing you up, daring you to think you have heard it all before. You haven't. She turns you on, sets you on fire, ignites your emotions, burns your anger, warms your soul and then cools you down. She changes your matter and changes your mind."
—Angela Jimenez

Workshops
Yoga for the Menstrual Cycle:
Many ancient cultures emphasize and honor the deeply creative energy that is available to all women during the time surrounding menstruation. The tradition of Tantric, earth/ feminine-based Yoga offers much wisdom in this aspect. In this workshop we will look at simple solutions to the common complaints—cramps, bloating, heavy flow and clotting—through practicing specific asana (physical postures), pranayama (breath work), mantra (chanting/ vocalizing), and easy-to-implement nutritional tips. Feel free to bring questions.

Yoga and Meditation for Women Facing Cancer and Their Partners: Jen/ed continues to work with organizations such as Gilda's Club, Cancer Care, the LGBT Center of NYC's "lesbians facing cancer initiative." This workshop highlights asana (physical postures), pranayama (breath work), mantra (chanting/vocalizing) and meditation, which focus energy specifically on health, love, and peace. We will work to bring healing energy into our bodies to support the well being of ourselves and those we love. There will be time to share information and personal experiences with others, as this is also a crucial part of wellness.

The Power of Women Speaking: This gathering is several workshops in one. First, we will focus on accessing the courage to vocalize; loudly, freely, confidently. The second aspect is a meditation focused on personal truth: how do we "find" what we need to speak about. And thirdly, we put them together: how do we speak our truths—unapologetically, courageously, without apprehension. Women's voices have been challenging and changing the world for generations. We all have important things to say!
