The combination of Leslie's poetic expertise
and rhythmical lyrics create an original and superb genre of song
that challenges musical classification in a wonderful way. Leslie
Helpert is a rare and incredibly untypical artist who joins the
ranks of the madly impassioned whose medium is primarily voice and
guitar, as well as percussion and piano.
Leslie spent most of her childhood engrossed in
composition of lyric and music and went to The Berklee College of
Music after high school. She studied extensively under the auspices
of George Garzone, king of Avant-Garde jazz, who encouraged Leslie
to free her musical ideas in ensemble. As her interests in the connection
of the body and the voice grew, she transferred to The Naropa University,
where she studied a rich variety of subjects pertinent in her quest
to unify breath, sound and movement.
Leslie has performed extensively around the country
as well as taken much time to quietly compose in nooks of serenity.
Leslie has recently shared her music during evenings with The Slip,
Sector 9, The Motet, Tony Furtado and Kaki King. These artists continue
to invite Leslie to play with them because they respect and are
moved by what Leslie is doing. Leslie's originality makes her enticing
and hard to forget. She has also performed at festivals such as
the High Sierra Music Festival, Creekside Jamboree, Adirondack Mountain
Music Festival, Athfest, Berkshire Mountain Music Festival and the
Harmonic Convergence on tours based out of Athens, GA.

Workshops:
Yoga, Movement & Voice
Leslie says, "My personal voice work comes from a place
of practice where I work with opening my body, using sound as the
deepest key to exploring the flexibility of the body and a deep
release of spirit. The voice, as a result, becomes textural, open
and 'warmed up.'"
"Some techniques we will explore may help
enable the practitioner to access a more dynamic quality of voice
and one's individual authentic sound. Come prepared to make noises
un-typical to a traditional 'classroom' setting. Much of the class
will incorporate yoga and physical movement."
Leslie Helpert is a certified yoga teacher as
well as a student of sound and holistic living.
