Tired of music dominated by impressario-backed,
barely pubescent girls touted as "edgy"? Four funked-up,
punked out mamasPLACENTAhave been laboring in a basement
in Oakland to bring forth pro-adult, pro-woman, pro-sex and pro-breastfeeding
hard rock music that is witty, yet still leaves listeners feeling
blissfully stupid and sweaty.
What makes 4 mothers decide to start a rock band,
and possibly a movement? Is it the single mom, struggling on the

abusive ex-husband, finding no other outlet?
Is it the lesbian step-mom, loving her step-son, fearful of losing
him to a country gone mad with the blood-lust of war? Is it the
married mom, whose bi-racial children face obstacles she could never
have imagined? Is it the grandmother, whose life partner is dying
from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis while her grown children birth
the next generation?
Or is it rock and rollthe rawness, the loudness,
the brash in-your-face, sweaty, stinkin thrill of it?
The Bay Areas Only All-Mom Hard Rock Band,
PLACENTA, mixes punk with funk, politics with poignancy, heavy distortion
with lactivism, and delivers every thumping original and wildly
creative cover with the power of four sexually mature women. Founded
in 2001, as The Lactators, PLACENTA has garnered praise from such
diverse publications as The Wall Street Journal Placenta rages,
to Slingshot! obnoxious, powerful, screamin', thrashin'
to USA Today
the rules of motherhood are being radically
rewritten--with a snarl, cymbal crash and power E-chord that would
make the lads in AC/DC stand and salute.
PLACENTAs stage show includes sing-along
hardcore punk songs (they give away sing-along sheets at every show),
chants that no cheerleader would ever attempt, and a guest spot
by someone known only as Virginia Moist
.
Is it the rock-steady, unflappable drummer (kt),
the ultra-cool hat-to-the-back how-did-she-do-that lead guitar player
(Kjestset), the funky, mysterious dance-as-she goes bassist (The
Down-Low), or the oh-my-gawd-she-can-really-belt-it and did-you-catch-the-antics
lead singer (Mother Nature, as in "Don't Mess With") that
makes audience members rethink "mothers" and "rockers",
referring to them simply as "mother rockers"
