Behind the Scenes - Sonya Heller

Profile

Sonya Heller is an internationally published Pop/Folk singer/songwriter, composer, proud member of ASCAP, performing member of Indiegrrl, and featured Folk Alliance artist, 2003 finalist at KRCL's songwriting competition at the Founders Folk and Bluegrass Festival in Salt Lake City.

Sonyas' music emanates from life on the streets of NYC. With loyal roots to comtemporary folk music, she infused those early influences with a love for Jazz, blues, and classical music. In most of her tracks you will always feel flowing rhythms, and her trademark finger picking, an outgrowth of her years playing classical as opposed to steel string guitars. Her influences are in early 70's folk like Crosby Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Collins, and the late Laura Nyro. Later influences are in the sounds of Annie Lennox and Susan Vega. Inspirations in Jazz include Sarah Vaughan, Alice Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders. With percussion accenting Sonya's pulse, and the warmth of fretless style bass, her music is in constant flow and has a trance like effect on the listener, while powerful lyrics send messages to the heart and soul.

Sonya Heller

Sonya's been recognized by the Songwriters Guild of America for excellence in songwriting, she's had a Warner Bros. chart topper in France for recording artist Janice DeRosa, and an original Soundtrack out on award winning film "Sisters in Resistance" now in European theatre and TV and currently being aired on PBS nationwide.

She's started playing the streets of NYC right out of college, and continues to tour and play concerts around the country. Her music can be heard on the radio from Salt Lake City, Utah to Spain and beyond. Gifted with great vocal flexibility and a love for experimentation, she's been asked to do session work in some of the worlds finest studios, including Skywalker Sound, where she recently recorded the Psalms of Ra, a 2 CD classical/world music spectacular combining ancient Hebrew, Sumerian and Arabic texts with Eastern and Western arrangements. As a socially committed artist she has toured with the Artists for Humanity Foundation, a collective of musicians promoting world peace and healing thru the arts, and toured for Greenpeace, promoting the use of solar-powered audio systems in the concert arena.

As a soloist, Sonya consistently graces every event with her well seasoned vocals, and her very unique brand of guitar playing, so get ready for some serious stage presence!
