Growing up in the streets of Hollywood, California,
Tamaras experienced the reality of the Hollywood music scene early
on. A self-taught guitarist by age 11, Tamaras' music was her positive
outlet to the dysfunctional world that surrounded her. Tamaras'
unique guitar and lyrical style was evident by the age of 13. After
being courted by members of the major label industry, Tamaras realized
that in order to keep her creative vision as an artist she would
have to pave her own path. In 1997 Tamaras and long time friend,
Elyse Avella, launched their own record label, Universal Love Music
to represent independent artists who want to maintain their artistic
integrity and promote social awareness. To date, Universal Love
Music has released Tamaras' six full-length albums including her
newest release, Ordinary Supergirl.
While Tamaras' electrifying live performances
will always be her most treasured form of expression, her talent
as a record producer is not to be overlooked. Tamaras' continued
evolution as an exceptional artist nourished her genre-defying sound
in her sixth album, Ordinary Supergirl. Ordinary Supergirl satisfies
the A + R appetite that for so long has been dominated by the major
record labels.
An artist in constant motion, Tamaras has cultivated
a dedicated following nationally and abroad. Whether with her band
or solo style, Tamaras follows no rules but the ones she creates
for herself.
"Ordinary Supergirl is one of the year's
best-produced records
the result is a perfect collaboration
between artistic vision and the recording process...A uniformly
strong record across all its tracks."
Bill Janush, Do It Yourself Awards 2004
"Her talent and passion have always shone
clearly through in her performances, and her latest CD, Ordinary
Supergirl, captures her continued growth and enthusiasm as a musician.
Ordinary Supergirl doesn't have a dry spot on itthe CD is
juicy, ripe with well-thought out arrangements and a full range
of sound. Evidence of Tamaras' skill as a musician and songwriter
weaves throughout each song..."

Special Message: Who Wants
to See Another Girl With a Guitar? by Tamaras
I was recently told by a bigwig man in the Music
Industry, "No one wants to see another girl with a guitar."
This comment brought my thoughts back to four
years ago when I attended the Gavin Summit, the most "prestigious"
radio convention in the U.S. Radio programmers eat a $30,000 lunch
while being entertained by a smorgasbord of talent Major Record
Companies deem worthy of manipulating for mass consumption, in hopes
they get selected for radio rotation. At this same convention I
was told many times that radio protocol would not air two womyn
artists back to back. When I acquired as to why this protocol existed,
the response was always
"It is just a fact, no one wants
to hear two women in a row. People would change the station,"
was their rationale. They concluded this "fact" by conducting
"surveys." I don't remember answering any surveys! In
"fact," no one I know remembers answering a "survey"
about their gender-specific radio surfing habits. Then Sarah McLachlan
and friends broke through this patriarchal, sexist fortress by independently
producing their own little festival, called Lilith Fair. Lillith
Fair showcased only womyn musicians and was a huge success, thus
changing the landscape of radio and the Music Industry. This is
the power of the people at work.
Don't get too comfortable, folks; it is still
much harder for womyn to break through in the music world. A few
corporations are gobbling up the majority of our airwaves and limiting
our musical nourishment. These Corporate Empires (Clear Channel,
Infinity, etc
) and Major Record Companies greatly underestimate
the public's ability to explore and acquire a palette for diverse
music. Add the female element and the mainstream box is even smaller
to crawl into. Creating my own record label, Universal Love Music,
alongside my dearest friend Elyse Avella, who has endlessly supported
my musical journey, has enabled me to grow in my own natural way
as an artist. I am dedicated to my artistic visions as a singer-songwriter
and as a record producer and I am not willing to sacrifice.
The Camp Betty festival is a space where we celebrate
and nurture solidarity in independence. A space to gather strength
and understanding and take that home to our neighborhoods and plant
the seeds of revolution in our own backyards. It is becoming increasingly
clear just how necessary it is to support independent thought, art,
music and community. I am so very proud of all my sisters who have
contributed so much of themselves to produce this outstanding festival.
With a new clarity, I dare ask you: WHO
WANTS TO SEE ANOTHER GIRL WITH A GUITAR?! I do
